Phoenix General Contractors' Journey to Success

Peter Regalado, co-founder of Phoenix General Contractors, reflects on seven years of growth, transformation, and opportunities seized with the support of the New Mexico Minority Business Development Agency (NM MBDA). From humble beginnings with a $500 project to managing million-dollar contracts, Phoenix General Contractors has become a powerhouse in construction, specializing in water and wastewater facilities while expanding into federal government projects.

“I remember our first job being $500,” said Regalado. “Now we’re taking on million-dollar projects with water utilities and pursuing federal government contracts after obtaining our 8(a) certification in 2021.” This certification was a significant milestone for the company, opening doors to larger opportunities and laying the foundation for exponential growth.

Regalado’s journey with NM MBDA began with some hesitation, as he ignored calls from the NM MBDA at first, recalling the Albuquerque MBDA representative’s persistence. “I thought it was just another sales call. But when I finally decided to meet him, I realized how much I had been missing out. My biggest mistake was not listening sooner.”

Once Regalado connected with the NM MBDA team, the partnership proved invaluable. “The MBDA didn’t just tell me what to do; they guided me every step of the way,” he said. From networking opportunities to training resources, the agency helped Phoenix General Contractors forge critical connections, including partnerships with organizations like the Hispano Chamber of Commerce.

Through these connections, Regalado began participating in programs like the “Emprendedores” initiative, where he now volunteers to share his journey with other aspiring entrepreneurs. “The Albuquerque business community embraced me,” he said. “Now, I’m committed to giving back by sharing the lessons I’ve learned.”

Growing a Business While Giving Back

One of the most significant impacts of the NM MBDA’s support has been its role in facilitating growth. With their guidance, Phoenix General Contractors doubled its revenue from 2023 to 2024—a remarkable achievement in a challenging industry. The company also increased its workforce to 18 employees and continues to rely on strategic subcontracting during peak seasons.

Regalado attributes much of the company’s success to his team. “My employees are my greatest asset,” he said. “They’re committed to the company and have been instrumental in our growth.”

Phoenix General Contractors is also deeply committed to its community. Beyond contributing to local economies through projects and job creation, Regalado actively advocates for workforce development. “There’s a stigma around construction work,” he said. “But these are high-paying, essential jobs. We need more investment in skills training to prepare the next generation of construction professionals.”

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Reflecting on his journey, Regalado emphasizes the importance of networking and mentorship. “The connections you make are everything,” he said. “I use the example of a pie—you can’t eat the whole thing yourself. You need to share slices with others and build relationships.”

Regalado also encourages business owners to take advantage of resources like the NM MBDA. “It’s not just about the services being free—it’s about the value they provide,” he explained. “The agency invests in you, and it’s up to you to make the most of it.”

For Phoenix General Contractors, the partnership with the NM MBDA has been transformative, turning a small startup into a thriving enterprise with a bright future. “I’m grateful for the support and excited for what’s next,” said Regalado. With a solid foundation, an expanding network, and a commitment to excellence, Phoenix General Contractors is poised for continued success.
