Homeland Security Small Business Vendor outreach session

Small Business Vendor Outreach Sessions

Each fiscal year (FY) the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization (OSDBU), as part of the Small Business Outreach Program, conducts ten sessions of 15-minute pre-arranged virtual meetings with small businesses. These Vendor Outreach Sessions (VOS) are conducted by DHS Small Business Specialists (SBS) from each operational contracting component and large businesses (“counselors”).  Four of the sessions are exclusively reserved for women-owned, service-disabled veteran-owned, small disadvantaged (including 8(a)), and HUBZone small businesses.  The VOS provide small businesses with the platform to discuss their capabilities and learn about DHS procurements and large business subcontracting and partnering opportunities, and business owners affected by the South Fork Fire, Salt Fire, and flooding.

This event will be a one-day summit held on October 12, 2024. There will be two sessions, the morning offered in English and the afternoon in Spanish, and lunch provided and open to all. The morning session from 9:00am to 12:00pm will be in English and will have presentations on federal and state contracting, a Hispanic business owner panel, and networking time with the resource tables. There will be lunch provided from 12pm-1pm with entertainment TBD. Then we will have a mirrored session from 1:00pm to 4:30pm all in Spanish.

WHAT IS THE ONE-DAY PILOT PROGRAM EXPERIENCE?

The comprehensive Pathways to Entrepreneurship Program has three pillars or “pathways” to entrepreneurship designed for Small Disadvantaged Businesses, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and HBCU students. The one-day pilot Program experience is an overview of the Pathways to Entrepreneurship Program and will feature highlights of the six-month pilot program for small disadvantaged businesses. The Pathways to Entrepreneurship program is created to empower small disadvantaged businesses seeking to pivot into new and emerging transportation markets; engage HBCU institutions, and educate aspiring HBCU students with an entrepreneurial mindset eager to explore new transportation markets and help them consider transportation career options upon graduation. Our ultimate Pathways to Entrepreneurship Program goal is to provide participants with the knowledge, skills, and resources to navigate cutting-edge technology markets and contribute to wealth-building in underserved communities.

The UNM Rainforest Forum was created by the UNM Rainforest Innovations Board of Directors to bring together UNM and business community members to enhance and strengthen UNM’s role in economic development.

For the next Rainforest Forum, join us to hear from Ellen Fisher, Ph.D., Vice President for Research at The University of New Mexico to learn how UNM serves as a catalyst for discovery, innovation, and economic growth.

The UNM Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) is committed to the advancement, facilitation, and celebration of cutting-edge discovery and innovation. At UNM, we believe research is education, and as New Mexico’s premier R1 institution, we are uniquely positioned to provide an unparalleled education for students and world-class opportunities for faculty. UNM research is vibrant, diverse, complex, and spans across multiple disciplines.

A chemist and materials scientist with academic leadership experience, Dr. Ellen Fisher serves as the Vice President for Research at the University of New Mexico (UNM) and is a Professor of Chemistry. She came to UNM in 2021 from Colorado State University (CSU) where she served as the Assistant Vice President for Strategic Initiatives (2017-2021) and the Senior Faculty Advisor (2014-2017) in the Office of the Vice President for Research. Prior to these appointments, Prof. Fisher served as the Chair of the Department of Chemistry at CSU and as the founding director of the interdisciplinary, cross-college School of Advanced Materials Discovery.

Dr. Fisher has published over 160 original peer-reviewed articles that span diverse topics in plasma science, laser spectroscopy, materials chemistry, chemistry education, team science, and the responsible conduct of research. Dr. Fisher has graduated 22 Ph.D. and 6 M.S. students, and she has mentored ~50 undergraduate research students, many of whom have gone on to a range of graduate and professional programs. Prof. Fisher is a Fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the American Vacuum Society (AVS). She has served on the editorial boards of several technical journals and is currently an Executive Editor of the American Chemical Society journal ACS-Applied Materials and Interfaces. She is also co-founder of Divergent Science, LLC, a team science consulting group focused on utilizing the science of team science and empowering teams to put research into practice.

Dr. Fisher received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Mathematics from Texas Lutheran University (formerly College) in 1986 (summa cum laude) and a Ph.D. in physical-analytical chemistry from the University of Utah in 1991. She performed postdoctoral research at Sandia National Labs in Albuquerque before joining the faculty at Colorado State University in 1993.

The SBA Office of Disaster Recovery & Resilience (ODR&R) will provide an overview of SBA disaster assistance available to businesses, homeowners, renters, and nonprofits impacted by the New Mexico South Fork Fire, Salt Fire, & Flooding declared disasterFEMAInternal Revenue Service (IRS)New Mexico Small Business Development Centers (SBDC), and the New Mexico Veteran Business Outreach Center (VBOC) will also provide their resources available. Other guest speakers from federal and state government agencies may also present on resources they can provide. Guest speakers vary by session. 

📆 Bi-weekly, every other Tuesday at 1:00 pm MT, starting July 30, 2024
