SUCCESS STORY
Fiesta On the Go
A Journey of Resilience and Growth
Fiesta On the Go, a vibrant and innovative small business, has become a beloved staple in our community with its unique spice kits and dehydrated salsa and guacamole, perfect for dinner at home or on the trail. Founded in 2020, Fiesta On the Go began its journey with a food truck, bringing flavorsome convenience to the people of New Mexico.
However, like many businesses, Fiesta On the Go faced unprecedented challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic forced them to temporarily close their food truck, pushing them to reevaluate their business strategy.
In response, Fiesta On the Go owner Lilia Avila made a strategic pivot. She and her business partner Silvia Ochoa started packaging their products for sale at local farmers' markets and through community vendors, providing an accessible way for people to enjoy their offerings even amidst social distancing measures. This adaptability not only kept their business afloat but also allowed them to stay connected with their customers during a difficult time.
Recognizing the need to expand their reach further, Fiesta On the Go launched an online platform, making it possible for customers to order their quick, easy, and affordable meal options from the comfort of their homes. This move proved to be a game-changer, allowing them to tap into a broader market and meet the growing demand for convenient, delicious food that aligns with busy lifestyles.
A significant factor in their successful transition and growth was the support they received from the New Mexico Minority Business Development Agency (NM MBDA). Avila said before she found the NM MBDA she was stuck.
“I needed that push, I needed that help so I could go forward. I didn’t know who could help me or where to go I just was getting frustrated,”
The NM MBDA provided Fiesta On the Go with critical resources, guidance, and support, helping them navigate the challenges of the pandemic and adapt to new market conditions. Through this support, Fiesta On the Go was able to refine their business model, optimize their operations, and enhance their online presence.
Today, Fiesta On the Go stands as a testament to resilience and innovation. Their products continue to delight customers, both locally and beyond, with easy-to-prepare meals that bring the joy of wholesome, flavorful food to everyone. Thanks to their partnership with NM MBDA, Fiesta On the Go not only survived a challenging period but also thrived, emerging stronger and more dynamic than ever.
“Keep moving and don’t give up, you know there was a time that I wanted to give up,” Avila said. “Work hard if I can do it, they can do it. It was hard for me. My speech issue, knowing not computers, I didn’t have the resources, but there’s resources. They can come here and they can get all the help they can get.”
Fiesta On the Go's story is an inspiring example of how, with determination and the right support, small businesses can overcome obstacles and achieve remarkable success. They embody the belief that delicious, wholesome food should be simple to prepare and accessible to everyone, and their journey reflects the spirit of community, resilience, and innovation.
